Border talks held after Indian nationals detained by Bangladesh villagers

Border forces of India and Bangladesh have been engaged in discussions following the detention of nationals from both countries near their shared border. The incidents involved the Border Security Force (BSF) of India detaining two Bangladeshi nationals, prompting retaliatory detentions by Bangladeshi villagers.

In Meherpur, Bangladesh, a 70-year-old Bangladeshi man, Abdul Mannan, was allegedly detained by BSF personnel while working near the Ichakhali border. Following his detention, local villagers reportedly crossed the border into India and detained two Indian nationals, Sachin Das and Ratan Biswas. The villagers then handed over the Indian nationals to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) camp.

The meeting was arranged promptly to defuse the situation.

A flag meeting was subsequently held between the BGB and BSF to resolve the situation. During this meeting, Mannan and the two Indian nationals were returned to their respective border forces. Lt Col Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), stated that the meeting was arranged promptly to de-escalate tensions.

In a separate incident along the Bhurungamari border in Kurigram, the BSF detained another Bangladeshi man, Azibor Rahman, 24. According to BGB officials, Azibor allegedly entered Indian territory through the border. Discussions are currently underway between the BGB and BSF to secure Azibor's return to Bangladesh through another flag meeting. The reasons for his border crossing are expected to be clarified once he is repatriated and questioned.
