Borno commissioner, Fadahunsi under probe over inciting comments — Police

Nigeria’s police have opened investigations into alleged inciting comments by Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Sainna Buba, Kuje Area Council Chairman Danjuma Shekwolo and Osun East Senator Francis Fadahunsi.

The law is very clear when it comes to inciting. It is criminal to incite members of the public, especially as you comment on the electoral process.

Police spokesman Ani Iniedu said inciting comments related to elections constitute a criminal offense. He said authorities had questioned Fadahunsi over an alleged threat against members of the Accord Party and would make the outcome of the investigations public.

The allegations followed reported comments by Buba threatening to flog residents who refused to support the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general election. Shekwolo reportedly told residents of Kuje Area Council to vote for the APC in 2027 or leave the council. Fadahunsi was recorded in a video allegedly threatening Accord Party members.

The Nigerian Police Force is responsible for maintaining law and order, and we will not shy away from this responsibility, no matter whose ox is gored.

Police also said 154 people arrested during the August 15 Osun governorship election were still being investigated. The force appealed to the public to provide statements and evidence needed to prosecute suspected offenders, saying witnesses’ reluctance to come forward remains a major obstacle to criminal prosecution.
