Bougainville House of Representatives prepares for pivotal September 22 sitting

Bougainville’s House of Representatives has fixed September 22, 2026, as the date for a sitting that will examine how prepared the region is for its next political milestones. Speaker Simon Pentanu issued the formal call for the House to meet in Buka at 2 p.m. Bougainville Standard Time.

Pentanu confirmed the date after consulting ABG President Ishmael Toroama, in accordance with the Calling of Meetings of the House of Representatives Act 2005. He has instructed all elected leaders to arrive in Buka at least 24 hours before the session, allowing time to secure a full quorum and complete preparations.

A central item will be the formal tabling and consideration of constituency independence-readiness reports. Kokoda Constituency is expected to receive particular attention after declaring that it had reached 100% readiness across state-building benchmarks. Members are also expected to review local governance achievements, infrastructure projects and development guidelines involving constituencies across Bougainville.

The sitting will provide a forum for legislative oversight, administrative acquittals and policy updates from the Toroama-Massat government. Parliamentarians will assess ongoing consultations with the national government and the legislative mechanisms connected to post-referendum processes. Staff in Buka are finalising arrangements for representatives from North, Central and South Bougainville.

Community leaders, civil society groups and international observers are expected to follow the session closely as the House guides Bougainville’s political transition and institutional preparations.
