Brazil busts gang stealing cancer drugs for resale to hospitals

Brazilian police have dismantled a sophisticated criminal network that specialized in stealing high-value cancer and immunosuppressant medications, only to resell them to public and private hospitals. The operation targeted the gang's activities across Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Goiás, and Pará.

Authorities revealed that the group, associated with the powerful Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) criminal organization, allegedly trafficked approximately 33 million reais (about $6.5 million) through the illicit resale of these vital drugs between 2025 and 2026. The investigation uncovered a "highly sophisticated and violent" operation responsible for at least 20 such robberies in the past six months.

Suspects, described as heavily armed, would steal the medication shipments. The stolen goods were then transported to areas controlled by the TCP in Rio de Janeiro's Complexo da Maré, where they were stored and distributed. To launder the origin of the drugs, the network utilized at least 25 shell companies, along with transport services and front individuals.

Part of the criminal cell focused on gathering inside information from transport company employees regarding routes and cargo. The illicitly obtained medications were then sold to hospitals, sometimes through rigged bidding processes where the network offered lower prices to secure contracts. Police emphasized that beyond the significant economic losses, the organization posed a serious public health risk, as cancer drugs require strict handling conditions to maintain efficacy and prevent contamination.
