Brazil's Liberal Party Names Ex-President's Son as Candidate Amid Coup Allegations

Brazil's Liberal Party has nominated Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, as its presidential candidate for the upcoming election. The elder Bolsonaro was recently sentenced to 26 years in prison for plotting a coup to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election. Flavio Bolsonaro, currently a senator, accepted the nomination at the party's convention in São Paulo.

Argentina's far-right President Javier Milei attended the convention, endorsing Flavio Bolsonaro and criticizing the current Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as "socialist trash." Milei, who used a chainsaw as a symbol during his own presidential campaign, presented Bolsonaro with large scissors, continuing a symbolic theme.
