Brazil's PL Party Sues ICL Over Flávio Bolsonaro Documentary, Citing Electoral Propaganda

Brazil's Liberal Party (PL) has filed a complaint with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) against the ICL (Instituto Conhecimento Liberta), accusing the institute of engaging in negative and premature electoral propaganda. The PL, which backs presidential pre-candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, claims the ICL's actions favor President Lula.

The lawsuit centers on a documentary titled "Flávio Bolsonaro: the true story about the eldest son." The film, released on digital platforms, has drawn criticism from the PL for its alleged partisan nature. The party asserts that the ICL is being used as a political vehicle for Lula, citing social media posts and paid advertisements that direct users to WhatsApp groups encouraging the spread of the documentary's link.

The action does not question the journalistic production or the exhibition of any content by the institute. The focus of the representation is on the clear instrumentalization of the channel as a true partisan vehicle for Lula.

The PL is seeking the immediate suspension of the ICL's "mobilization and organized diffusion of political-electoral content" and the prohibition of using its digital assets for attacking Flávio Bolsonaro. The party argues that this dissemination violates electoral laws, as the official campaign period has not yet begun.

The ICL has refuted the allegations, emphasizing its commitment to rigorous fact-checking and historical accuracy. The institute stated that the lawsuit represents an attempt to intimidate and silence a media outlet, transforming the exercise of press freedom into an object of judicial persecution and censorship. The ICL maintains that framing its journalistic production as illicit electoral propaganda undermines its investigative work.
