Brazil's top judge deplores Argentine president's insult to a Supreme Court justice

Luiz Edson Fachin, president of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF), has condemned Argentine President Javier Milei for insulting a magistrate of the high court. The incident occurred during a convention in São Paulo where Milei was supporting the presidential candidacy of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. During his speech to supporters, Milei referred to Judge Alexandre de Moraes as "bald trash." Moraes is overseeing the legal process that led to the conviction of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio's father, on charges related to a coup attempt. Fachin stated that Milei's comments were "disrespectful to a magistrate of the highest court of the country, made on Brazilian soil, for an act of jurisdiction practiced in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the Federative Republic of Brazil." He further described Milei's remarks as "incompatible" with the civility expected between nations and reaffirmed the independence of the Brazilian judiciary. De Moraes had previously prohibited Milei from visiting Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest, at his residence in Brasilia. Milei had asserted that the former president is "unjustly imprisoned." The Argentine president also criticized Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, accusing him of being a "thief" and of "spreading communism" in Latin America, urging Flávio Bolsonaro to defeat the current government in the upcoming presidential elections. Edinho Silva, president of the Workers' Party (PT), also criticized Milei's statements, accusing the Argentine leader of disrespecting both Lula and Brazilian institutions.
