Brazil summons Argentina's ambassador after Milei's insults to Lula and Supreme Court

Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Argentina's ambassador to explain President Javier Milei's offensive remarks made during a political event in Brazil. Milei referred to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a "convict" and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes as "bald trash," sparking a strong diplomatic protest from Brazil.

There is no precedent for a foreign president who, on national territory, heaps aggressions and offenses on the Head of State, democratic institutions, including the Judiciary, and the Brazilian people.

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira called Argentine Ambassador Daniel Raimondi to convey the Brazilian government's "repulsion to the insults issued by President Javier Milei" and demand explanations for the Argentine leader's behavior on Brazilian soil. Simultaneously, Brazil's ambassador in Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, was recalled for consultations, a significant diplomatic protest indicating severe displeasure.

The ministry highlighted the "especially regrettable" nature of the incident, given the 203-year friendship and cooperation between Brazil and Argentina, with Brazil being Argentina's primary trading partner.

Milei made the remarks on Saturday, July 25, at the National Convention of the Liberal Party, alongside Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. He also claimed Lula would lead Brazil into an economic crisis and expressed confidence that Flávio Bolsonaro could prevent "socialism" in the country. Milei's comments about Minister Moraes, whom he accused of "vindictiveness," were particularly inflammatory.
