Milei Accuses Brazil, Mexico, and U.S. Democrats of Funding 'Anti-Argentine Campaign'

Argentine President Javier Milei has accused the governments of Brazil and Mexico, along with the U.S. Democratic Party, of financing an "anti-Argentine campaign." These declarations, made on Sunday, appear to be a response to criticisms leveled against Argentina and its national football team, particularly in the context of the World Cup.

In an interview with local radio Mitre, Milei stated, "Who put more money into this anti-Argentine campaign... The government of Brazil. 25% of the resources came from the government of Brazil." He offered no evidence to support his claims. Milei also implicated Mexico and the U.S. Democratic Party, characterizing them as "progressive leaders who do not want the ideas of freedom to work."

The president's accusations come amid heightened tensions with Brazilian authorities. Milei had previously criticized Brazilian President Lula da Silva as a "convict" and "thief" and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes as "bald trash" during a convention in São Paulo. This convention officially endorsed Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, as the Liberal Party's presidential candidate.

In response to Milei's remarks, Brazil's ambassador to Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, was recalled for consultations. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry stated this measure was taken "due to the insults uttered" by Milei. The situation marks a tense moment in the relationship between the two neighboring Mercosur partners. Milei also alleged that the Lula government collaborated to support the opposition in Argentina's past election campaign, calling it a "neighbor who interfered in Argentina's politics to try to distort history in favor of the fucking leftists."
