Brazil: Woman Dies Rope Jumping After Staff Forget Safety Rope

A tragic accident has claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman during a rope jumping excursion in Brazil. The woman fell approximately 40 meters from the Ponte do Esqueleto bridge near Limeira, in the state of São Paulo, because the extreme sports provider's staff forgot to attach her to the safety rope.

Videos of the incident reportedly show three men carrying the woman to the edge of the bridge and then pushing her off. The safety rope lay coiled on the ground beside her. Emergency services arrived but could only confirm her death. Six individuals connected to the extreme sports operation have been arrested.

Rope jumping, a sport involving a climber's rope that is less elastic than bungee jumping cords, is secured at a different angle to create a pendulum motion. The city of Limeira announced it would file a lawsuit against federal authorities responsible for the bridge's safety. Mayor Murilo Félix stated that repeated requests for safety measures had been ignored, leading to this "tragedy."
