Brazilian City May Go Without Mayor After Second Election Attempt

The small Brazilian city of Tuiuti, with just 7,000 inhabitants, is on the verge of going without a mayor for the second time since the October 2024 elections. A supplementary election is scheduled for this Sunday, but even this may not resolve the leadership vacuum.

The complexity began when Amarildo Lima (PSB), the most voted candidate in 2024, had his registration denied by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). His daughter, Milena do Amarildo (PSB), is now running in the supplementary election. However, her vice-candidate, Roberto Zamana (PSB), had his registration deemed ineligible by the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) on Thursday, June 11.

Zamana's candidacy was rejected because his registration request was formally received on June 3, after the deadline of May 31. This leaves Milena do Amarildo competing against Careca (União) and Pedrinho (MDB) under a "sub judice" status for her running mate.

Milena do Amarildo expressed confidence in overcoming the challenges, stating that her campaign has filed an appeal and she believes they will win and govern effectively. Her father, Amarildo, is currently ineligible due to a conviction related to irregular land division in Tuiuti, which falls under Brazil's "Ficha Limpa" (Clean Record) law.
