Brazilian group protests tax hikes outside Congress

A Brazilian advocacy group is staging a protest outside the National Congress to voice opposition to rising taxes. The organization, known as "Ranking dos Políticos" (Ranking of Politicians), organized the demonstration on Thursday to draw attention to what they describe as an excessive tax burden on citizens and businesses.

The protest features 37 enlarged replicas of invoices, strategically placed on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, the central administrative area of Brasília. These replicas are intended to visually represent the 37 tax increase proposals that the group claims have been registered since 2023. The initiative, under the banner "Chega de Mais Impostos" (Enough More Taxes), seeks to make the impact of the tax load tangible for both companies and consumers.

Each displayed invoice is meant to provide information about the specific tax charges, their impact on businesses, and how these costs are eventually passed on to consumers. Beyond raising awareness, "Ranking dos Políticos" also aims to use the event as a platform to advocate for the formation of an "anti-tax bloc" within the National Congress. This bloc would presumably work to block future tax increase proposals and potentially push for tax reductions.
