Brazilian striker Geyse gives América victory as perfect run continues

Geyse scored twice on Friday to turn América’s match against Pumas UNAM around and keep the reigning champions perfect after six rounds of Mexico’s women’s Apertura tournament.

Pumas took the lead in the 18th minute through Portugal’s Stephany Ribeiro, who collected the rebound after her first effort struck the post and sent it into the net. The home side stayed organized and controlled parts of the match before América equalized in the 42nd minute.

Geyse accepted a pass from United States forward Sarah Luebbert and finished with her right foot. She then completed the comeback in the 66th minute, heading in a cross from Kimberly Rodríguez after Pumas had been reduced to 10 players following Casandra Montero’s dismissal.

Despite the disadvantage, Pumas continued to attack, but América secured a 2-1 victory. Coached by Spaniard Ángel Villacampa, the club remains at the top of Group B with six wins from six matches, 18 points, 30 goals for and three against. The result leaves América six points ahead of Chivas Guadalajara.

Chivas had earlier beaten Atlas 4-0, with Alicia Cervantes scoring twice and Jasmine Casarez and Denise Castro adding one goal each. The sixth round continues with San Luis visiting Necaxa, Toluca facing Monterrey and Pachuca traveling to Tijuana. Cruz Azul will visit Querétaro and Santos Laguna will play Tigres UANL on Sunday, while Monday’s matches include Juárez FC against Atlante and Puebla against León.
