Britain's youngest Formula E driver says talent isn't enough anymore

Taylor Barnard, the youngest driver in Formula E history, is reflecting on his rapid rise and the increasing challenges facing aspiring motorsport professionals. At just 22 years old, Barnard has already broken several records in the series, becoming the youngest to achieve a podium finish, secure pole position, and score points.

I feel like I got into racing by the skin of my teeth.

Despite his success, Barnard emphasizes that raw talent is no longer enough to succeed in motorsport. He points to the "extreme costs" involved in climbing the racing ladder, noting that prices have become "so blown out of proportion." Barnard, who hails from a "very normal, working family," recalls his family having to remortgage their house to support his career, highlighting the immense sacrifices required.

Barnard's journey began in karting, following in his father's footsteps. His talent propelled him through British and European karting championships, eventually securing him the backing needed for Formula 3 and Formula 2. He later secured a seat in Formula E with McLaren before transferring to DS Penske for the current season.

Now a professional driver, Barnard is focused on his ultimate goal: becoming world champion. He also expresses a strong desire to support other young, talented drivers who face financial obstacles. Barnard believes that many deserving individuals are being shut out of the sport due to prohibitive costs, a situation he feels is "only getting worse" and is "not right."
