British ex-MP Ann Widdecombe beaten 21 times with hammer in fatal home invasion

Details have emerged regarding the brutal murder of former British MP Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead with severe injuries at her rural home in Haytor, southwest England.

Prosecutors informed the Westminster Magistrates' Court that the 78-year-old former Conservative politician was struck 21 times with a hammer during an attack that occurred while she was having lunch. The assault was captured on the home's security cameras. The killing of Widdecombe, a spokesperson for the anti-immigration party Reform UK, has reignited concerns about politicians' safety, echoing the 2016 murder of Labour MP Jo Cox.

A 28-year-old man, Joshua Kerry, has been identified as the primary suspect. He appeared in court after being initially arrested and then re-arrested on charges related to the commission, preparation, or instigation of terrorist acts. While security forces initially dismissed a political motive, counter-terrorism police have since taken over the investigation, treating it as a "targeted attack" and exploring a "possible political motivation."

According to prosecutor Kashif Malik, Kerry entered Widdecombe's property on July 8 wearing black gloves. He allegedly asked Widdecombe if she had bank cards and identification before striking her with a hammer, knocking her from her chair, and stealing her wallet. Kerry reportedly spent only two minutes inside the residence.

Widdecombe's body was discovered by the gardener at her property. Her personal assistant had asked the employee to check on her after she failed to appear for a scheduled television interview the previous day. The accused remains in custody pending trial.
