BROU President visits Pando branch after robbery, calls incident 'isolated'

Banco República (BROU) President Álvaro García personally visited the Pando branch in Canelones after it was targeted in a substantial robbery. García aimed to offer support to the staff, acknowledging the high stress such events cause. He stated that while the incident was deeply unsettling for employees, the bank prioritizes their safety above all else.

García described the robbery as an "isolated case," despite its significant impact. He assured that the bank would meticulously investigate the circumstances and identify areas for security improvement. "We learn in these types of situations, and the bank has accumulated all these experiences throughout its history to improve security," García remarked, indicating a commitment to adapting to changing security needs.

During a press conference outside the branch, García confirmed ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, including direct communication with Minister Carlos Negro. This partnership aims to ensure thorough follow-up on the case. The bank's general manager, Mariela Espino, addressed the amount of money stolen, explaining that it depended on the branch's daily operations and customer flow, rather than being openly accessible. She also noted that procedures might be adjusted to better secure funds within the branch's dynamics.

Espino also provided details about one of the robbers who entered the bank shortly before the assault. She explained that the individual entered as a normal customer, took a number, and stayed for only about 30 seconds before the other assailants entered. This observation, captured in a screenshot from Subrayado, highlights the swift and calculated nature of the robbery. The bank plans to analyze the event to draw further lessons and enhance its security protocols across its network.
