BTS opts out of Grammy Awards, citing desire for music to transcend borders

Global music sensation BTS has announced they will not be submitting their work for consideration at the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards. The decision was revealed through a joint statement on the group's Instagram story on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

We have decided not to submit our work for consideration at the Grammy Awards this year. We hope that music can be heard and loved as it is, not separated by region or language.

The seven members of BTS, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, collectively wrote in Korean that they have chosen not to participate in this year's Grammy selection process. Their statement emphasized a belief that "music should be heard and loved as it is, not separated by region or language." They also extended their gratitude to their dedicated fanbase, ARMY, and all their supporters.

While neither BTS nor their agency, Hybe, provided further explanation, the move is widely interpreted as a protest against the Recording Academy's recent introduction of a new category: Best Asian Pop Music Performance. This new category, set to debut at the 2027 Grammy ceremony, has drawn criticism for potentially segregating Asian artists.

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed his sadness over BTS's decision but stated he understands and respects their choice as fellow music creators. He clarified that artists submitting work to the new Asian Pop category are still eligible for major awards like Record of the Year, Album of the Year, or Song of the Year, indicating that BTS could have submitted their music to these general categories as well.
