Building collapses near Delhi University, killing at least one person

At least one person died and several others were trapped when a five-storey building collapsed in New Delhi’s Satya Niketan neighborhood.

The area is known for student accommodation near the University of Delhi campus. Authorities did not immediately say how many people were trapped, while local media reported that several dozen people lived in the building.

Lawmaker Anil Sharma said some people had been rescued and that several others still under the rubble were calling for help. Police, firefighters and other emergency services searched the debris, while heavy machinery cleared rubble to assist the rescue effort. Officials said at least two hospitalized people were in critical condition.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known. Similar incidents occur frequently in some parts of India during the monsoon season from June to September, when heavy and prolonged rain can weaken aging structures.
