Bukky Wright reveals acting career hiatus was for children, announces return

Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has opened up about her decision to step away from her acting career and relocate abroad, emphasizing that her priority was raising her children. The 59-year-old star, once a prominent figure in Nigerian cinema, explained that she has no regrets about prioritizing her maternal duties over her career.

I left the country many years ago because of my children, and I would do it over and over again if I had to. I think I need to apologise for leaving without letting my fans know, but mama duty called.

Wright, who took a significant break from the industry in the mid-2010s, admitted during an appearance on The Morayo Show that she left without informing her fans and owes them an apology. "Mama duty called," she stated, explaining that her children were living abroad and, particularly for her sons, she felt their need for a mother's presence was paramount. "I was ready to leave everything behind for them because they are my future."

After years away, Wright made a comeback in January 2025 with a role in 'Something About the Briggs.' She also discussed reviving her 2008 film 'Omotara Johnson,' a decision driven by persistent requests from her fans who desired a sequel. Wright revealed she intentionally kept her return to acting quiet until filming was complete, believing that keeping personal goals close to her heart leads to better manifestation.

My fans asked for the sequel to Omotara Johnson. They wanted it, so I decided to bring it back.

Her experience mirrors that of other Nigerian actresses who have temporarily stepped back from the spotlight to focus on family. Sola Sobowale, for instance, previously shared that she took a break to support her children through their university education in the United Kingdom. Wright's return signifies her commitment to the industry, stating, "It's the return of Omotara Johnson and the return of Bukky Wright, and I'm here to stay."

I didn’t tell anybody I was coming back. A lot of people didn’t know I was shooting because I kept everything to myself. I’ve learnt that when you keep things close to your heart, they manifest better, and that really worked for me.
