Bundesliga: Victory over Frankfurt puts Augsburg top of the table

Frankfurt looked like the sure winners for a half. Then, within 60 seconds of the restart, FC Augsburg turned the match on its head and went on to win 4-1, taking the Bundesliga lead after two matchdays.

Jonathan Burkardt headed Frankfurt in front in the sixth minute, rising above Augsburg defender Hennes Behrens to meet Younes Ebnoutalib’s cross. The goal only increased the hosts’ momentum. Can Uzun soon missed a clear chance against Finn Dahmen, while Frankfurt continued to keep Augsburg under constant pressure.

Augsburg could barely make an attacking impact before the interval. Dahmen kept out efforts from Raphael Onyedika and Elias Baum, and Ebnoutalib then missed twice before halftime. He first tried to lift the ball over Dahmen, who saved, and then narrowly missed from a tight angle. Frankfurt’s wastefulness soon proved costly.

Only 30 seconds after the restart, Bayern loanee Arijon Ibrahimović headed Augsburg level. Frankfurt had barely recovered when Robin Fellhauer put the visitors ahead after a mistake by Eintracht goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. Alexis Claude-Maurice made it 3-1 in the 65th minute, and Fabian Rieder completed the turnaround in the 89th.

The result sharply changed the outlook for both teams. Augsburg have six points from their opening two games, while Frankfurt have only one and sit in the lower half. Eintracht coach Hütter had been looking forward to returning to his “living room” after five years and made three changes from the 3-3 draw at Union Berlin. Lilian Brassier started in central defense, Mario Götze moved into defensive midfield, and Ritsu Doan played on the right wing. Augsburg, meanwhile, brought Ibrahimović into the starting lineup after Anton Kade missed the match with muscular problems.
