Bus and truck collision in Sonora kills one, injures 39

A severe collision between a passenger bus and a semi-trailer truck on Mexico's Federal Highway 15, south of Empalme, Sonora, has left at least one person dead and 39 injured. The accident occurred around 11 p.m. on Monday, August 3, near the locality of Las Guásimas.

The bus, operated by the GTB line and identified by economic number 439, was en route from Sinaloa to Tijuana. Official reports indicate the crash was a rear-end collision with the semi-trailer truck. The deceased has been identified as Cruz Antonio Castro Higuera, 48, the bus driver, who died at the scene. His co-driver, Lorenzo Rubio Aboite, sustained injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.

Emergency services, including municipal Civil Protection, Red Cross, firefighters, and other agencies, responded rapidly. They worked for several hours to free trapped passengers, provide pre-hospital care, and transport the injured to hospitals in Guaymas and Empalme. Preliminary triage classified seven patients as critical (code red), seven as serious (code yellow), and 12 as stable (code green), with others awaiting medical assessment.

Civil Protection cautioned that the information is preliminary and subject to change as investigations continue and medical attention progresses. The accident caused partial disruptions to traffic on the highway as rescue operations, vehicle removal, and forensic procedures were carried out.
