Business Owner Charged for Selling Over 1,000 Pairs of Fake Adidas, Nike, Gucci Shoes

Authorities in Vietnam's Phu Tho province have initiated legal proceedings against Nguyen Van Chung, a 35-year-old proprietor accused of selling over a thousand pairs of counterfeit shoes. Chung faces charges of infringing industrial property rights, a consequence of his alleged involvement in distributing fake products from well-known brands like Adidas, Nike, and Gucci.

The investigation, part of a provincial effort to combat smuggling, commercial fraud, and counterfeit goods, led to the discovery of 1,115 pairs of shoes bearing signs of counterfeiting. Along with the footwear, approximately 500 boxes, product tags, and labels featuring these brands were confiscated from Chung's business and warehouse in Tu Vu commune.

Chung reportedly admitted to knowing the shoes were not genuine and lacked legitimate proof of origin. Despite this, he allegedly procured and produced the counterfeit items to illicitly profit from their sale. To deceive customers, he used authentic-looking packaging and branding to create a false sense of legitimacy for the products.

An official assessment by the National Office of Intellectual Property confirmed that the seized shoes were indeed counterfeit. The total value of the confiscated fake goods is estimated at over 253 million Vietnamese dong (approximately $10,000 USD). The Phu Tho Provincial Police have cautioned businesses against producing or trading in counterfeit goods, warning of severe legal penalties.
