Bwala thanks Wike aide Lere as Rufai vows to speak truth to power

Oseni Rufai says a heated exchange on Arise TV has strengthened, rather than weakened, his resolve to speak against those in power. In a post on X, the presenter thanked Nigerians for their messages and calls of support, saying he was “embarrassed and emboldened” by their response.

I will like to thank you all for your messages of support and calls too numerous to respond to. I am embarrassed and emboldened by your love.

Rufai tied his position to Nigeria’s labour history, citing the late labour leader Michael Imoudu and the 1945 general strike. He recalled the opposition Imoudu faced from parts of the Nigerian elite and from people who sided with the colonial government during the fight for workers’ rights. Rufai said Imoudu’s persistence shaped his own approach to advocacy and speaking out against perceived injustice.

“A lot of people ask what is my conviction in fighting for a better Nigeria and I tell them history,” Rufai wrote. He said his priorities were “the love of country, God and welfare of the left behind,” adding that he was not trying to impress everyone or agree with them. He acknowledged that he could make mistakes but said speaking truth to power would remain central to his work.

Former presidential aide Daniel Bwala responded separately by thanking Olayinka Lere, an aide to Nyesom Wike, for what he described as holding Rufai and fellow Arise TV anchor Ayo Mairoese to account. Bwala alleged that the presenters lacked objectivity and applied double standards, particularly in coverage involving Peter Obi and the 2027 election.

Bwala also accused the presenters of using blackmail and said journalists should remain objective. He suggested that interviews could be ended abruptly if they did not. He closed by saying Lere had exposed the presenters’ conduct, while Rufai pledged to keep advocating for vulnerable Nigerians and amplifying issues affecting the country.
