BYD Opens Indonesia Plant with Capacity to Produce 150,000 Cars a Year

BYD has officially opened its electric vehicle production facility at Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Park in West Java, strengthening Indonesia’s bid to become a regional base for new-energy vehicles.

The factory occupies 126 hectares and can produce up to 150,000 vehicles a year. Its output is expected to serve Indonesia’s domestic market while also supporting exports to other Southeast Asian markets.

The project represents an investment of about 16 trillion rupiah. BYD said the facility could employ more than 20,000 people once it reaches full operation, and it has already involved more than 5,000 local workers during the initial phase.

The inauguration brought together government officials and BYD executives, including West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, National Economic Council Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita and BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division General Manager Liu Xueliang.

Agus said the government hoped BYD would develop more than vehicle manufacturing in Indonesia. “We hope BYD’s investment will cover not only vehicles, but also the ecosystem from upstream to downstream, from raw-material processing and battery development to the battery-recycling industry,” he said. He added that the investment could create jobs and strengthen Indonesia’s automotive industrial ecosystem.
