BYU-Pathway Worldwide Secures NUC Accreditation to Operate in Nigeria

Brigham Young University (BYU)-Pathway Worldwide, based in Idaho, USA, has officially secured accreditation from Nigeria's National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as a transnational higher education institution. This significant milestone comes after a rigorous six-year approval process.

Brian Ashton, President of BYU-Pathway Worldwide, announced the accreditation during a devotional service in Ikeja, Lagos. He expressed gratitude to the NUC for its support throughout the process, stating, "We are grateful to the NUC for recognizing BYU. It has been six years in the process. It’s been great to work with everyone at the NUC, and they’ve been very supportive."

The university intends to make a meaningful contribution to Nigeria's education sector by equipping students with globally recognized qualifications. Ashton added, "We hope to be able to serve the people of Nigeria and have our students do their national service and be employed in whatever opportunities they’re qualified for."

Currently, the NUC's approval covers six of the university's eight bachelor's degree programs, with accreditation for the remaining two still pending. BYU-Pathway Worldwide offers fully online degree programs designed to provide students with internationally recognized qualifications suitable for employment and further education worldwide.

Victor Ukorebi, Senior International Manager for the Africa Region at BYU-Pathway Worldwide, highlighted the affordability of the programs, noting that a degree can be earned for approximately ₦420,000. He asserted that the quality of education is comparable to degrees obtained in the United States and is competitively priced within Nigeria. Elder Christian Chigbundu of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints described the accreditation as a major opportunity for Nigerian students. Approximately 27,000 students are currently enrolled in BYU-Pathway Worldwide programs globally.
