Cagliari forward Trepy regains consciousness after pool accident

Cagliari forward Yael Trepy has made a significant recovery after being pulled unconscious from a swimming pool in Sardinia, regaining consciousness and being taken off mechanical ventilation. The 20-year-old player was airlifted to Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari on Sunday after experiencing difficulty while swimming with friends at a villa.

Following the incident, Trepy was placed in a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator. However, his condition improved over the following days. Doctors began gradually reducing his sedation and ventilation on Tuesday, allowing him to wake from the induced coma. Dr. Stefania Milia, Director of the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, confirmed on Wednesday that Trepy had "fully recovered consciousness: he is alert and co-operative and, at present, shows no evident neurological deficits."

While Trepy's recovery is a positive development, he remains in intensive care and under close medical supervision. Milia stated, "He continues to receive close clinical and respiratory monitoring." Earlier medical updates indicated that Trepy was fever-free and that his respiratory function had improved from the severe state he was in upon admission. Despite these improvements, doctors had previously described his prognosis as guarded.

The incident reportedly occurred when Trepy entered a deeper part of the pool where he could not touch the bottom. The accident happened during the weekend when Trepy and his Cagliari teammates had been given time off following a Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo on Friday. Trepy had played 54 minutes in that match and made eight Serie A appearances for Cagliari last season, scoring one goal.

Trepy joined Cagliari's academy in 2022 after starting his youth career in France with US Creteil-Lusitanos. His recovery of consciousness and removal from mechanical ventilation mark a crucial improvement in his health, offering relief to his club, teammates, and supporters.
