Cakobau extends Drua stay

Penaia Cakobau will continue his tenure with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, having signed a one-year contract extension that will see him with the team through the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season. Cakobau initially joined the Drua ahead of the 2026 campaign on a short-term contract to cover injuries.

However, his performances and versatility across the front row quickly established him as an integral member of the squad. The native of Somosomo, Taveuni, made four appearances during the 2026 season, scoring his first Super Rugby Pacific try against the Western Force. In that same match, he demonstrated his adaptability by shifting to loosehead prop after an injury to Haereiti Hetet.

Before his time with the Drua, Cakobau represented Suva in the Skipper Cup and later played in New Zealand for North Harbour. His strong form also earned him selection for the Flying Fijians squad for the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup and the subsequent European tour. A former member of Queen Victoria School’s Deans-winning Under-18 side in 2011, Cakobau expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue representing the Drua.

Fijian Drua General Manager Rugby, Baden Stephenson, highlighted Cakobau's ability to seize opportunities. Cakobau's re-signing is a significant boost for the Drua's forward pack, adding depth and experience as the team continues its preparations for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.
