Cali prepares for August 7 presidential inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella

Cali, the capital of Colombia's Valle del Cauca department, is gearing up to host the presidential inauguration of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella on August 7. Mayor Alejandro Eder announced that the city is implementing robust security measures to guarantee a safe and tranquil ceremony. "We are going to secure Cali and Valle del Cauca to ensure a safe and completely peaceful inauguration," Eder stated, emphasizing the commitment to public safety for the event. He further revealed that a security council meeting was held with the governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro, to coordinate all protection measures. A Unified Command Post (PMU) will be established to continuously monitor and coordinate the security arrangements. While the exact venue for the inauguration remains unconfirmed, and the change of city from Bogotá requires approval from the Congress of the Republic, local media suggest the ceremony might take place at the Universidad Santiago de Cali's auditorium, known as Arena USC. De la Espriella's decision to hold the inauguration outside the capital has drawn attention, with initial considerations for a military garrison in Popayán facing criticism for logistical and security concerns. The move to Cali aims to address these issues, though the final location is still pending official approval.
