Cali prepares major security operation for Colombia's presidential inauguration

Cali, the capital of Valle del Cauca, is gearing up to host Colombia's presidential inauguration on Friday, August 7, 2026, presenting a significant security challenge and an opportunity to showcase its capacity for hosting major national and international events. Mayor Alejandro Eder expressed confidence in the city's preparedness, recalling its successful organization of the COP16 summit in 2024 and highlighting the deployment of 11,000 uniformed personnel and advanced air security technology.

The inauguration ceremony will take place at the Arena USC of the Universidad Santiago de Cali. Security has been intensified in strategic areas, including Comuna 18, with support from special units of the Police and the Army. The city's proximity to regions with active illegal armed groups and criminal structures poses an additional challenge, making the protection of the event a high priority due to the area's history of violence.

Mayor Eder acknowledged the persistent issues of poverty, lack of infrastructure, and the presence of drug trafficking organizations in the southern part of the country, including Cali and its surrounding municipalities, which have experienced attacks on military and security installations in recent years. Despite these challenges, the city is preparing to welcome international leaders, including King Felipe VI of Spain and several Latin American presidents, along with diplomatic representatives.

Beyond the security concerns, the city administration views the inauguration as a crucial economic driver. Hotel occupancy in Cali has reached approximately 80% and is expected to climb to 100%, generating significant revenue. The decision to establish an alternate presidential headquarters in Cali is also anticipated to bring the national government closer to the regions, fostering development projects and strengthening institutional presence outside of Bogotá.
