Cameroon’s Vice Presidency: ‘Any Controversy Orchestrated by Political Actors Is Futile,’ Paul Atanga Nji Says

Paul Atanga Nji wants the controversy over restoring Cameroon’s vice presidency to end. In a column published by The Guardian Post on September 7, the territorial administration minister said political actors’ efforts to stir opposition were futile and called for an end to what he described as a “witch hunt” over the post.

Atanga Nji linked the proposal to President Paul Biya’s pledge at his swearing-in ceremony on November 6, 2025. Biya had said the government would submit reforms to Parliament to help the state operate more effectively and adapt its institutions to the demands of its environment.

The minister wrote that Biya had followed through on that promise. In March 2026, while Parliament was sitting, the president presented a bill to amend the Constitution. Atanga Nji identified the creation of the vice presidency as the principal change.
