Cameroon strengthens disaster prevention in Southwest mangroves

Cameroon's Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the AJESH association, is intensifying disaster prevention efforts in the vital mangrove ecosystems of Limbe and Tiko in the Southwest region. This initiative addresses the increasing frequency of climate-related hazards and aims to bolster early warning systems and protect these crucial natural barriers.

Key stakeholders, including local mayors, government administrations, the National Observatory on Climate Change (ONACC), private sector representatives, traditional authorities, and AJESH, convened to discuss strategies. The meeting focused on coordinating responses to growing risks of flooding and coastal erosion, identifying shortcomings in current systems, and formulating recommendations for improvement.

The project emphasizes ecosystem-based solutions and a concerted fight against rigid plastic waste, which significantly weakens the mangroves. These mangroves are critical for coastal protection, biodiversity preservation, carbon storage, and supporting local fishing communities. The initiative is part of the "Together for People and Planet" (ToPP) program, funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) through WWF, benefiting AJESH.

The works, presided over by Prof. Bring, director of Conservation and Management of Natural Resources, representing the Minister of Environment, are part of a strategy to improve the resilience of populations to the effects of climate change.
