'Campin' is an adequate adaptation of 'camping', says FundéuRAE

The FundéuRAE foundation, a collaboration between the EFE news agency and the Royal Spanish Academy, has declared that the Spanish word 'campin' is a correct adaptation of the English term 'camping'. This guidance aims to promote the proper use of the Spanish language in media.

The foundation points to examples in news reports, such as "Los campings madrileños rozan el lleno total este verano" (Madrid campsites are almost full this summer) and "Los campings más bonitos del mundo que tienes que visitar" (The most beautiful campsites in the world you must visit). It explains that, like other words ending in '-ing', 'camping' can be adapted by dropping the final 'g', reflecting its common pronunciation in Spanish, as supported by the 'Ortografía de la lengua española' (Orthography of the Spanish language).

FundéuRAE specifically advises against the hybrid form 'cámping', deeming it neither fully English nor Spanish. For the plural of the adapted word, the 'Diccionario panhispánico de dudas' (Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts) suggests 'cámpins' and 'cámpines', both accented on the first 'a'.

Additionally, the foundation clarifies related terms: 'campismo' refers to the activity of camping, and 'campista' refers to a person who camps. FundéuRAE emphasizes its mission to ensure the correct usage of Spanish in media outlets.
