Can Tho inters remains of 38 fallen soldiers at city cemetery

Can Tho city in Vietnam held a solemn ceremony to lay to rest the remains of 38 fallen soldiers at the city's martyrs' cemetery. The cemetery is already the final resting place for more than 3,800 soldiers who sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Lieutenant General Nguyễn Văn Gấu, a member of the Central Party Committee and Deputy Minister of National Defense. The remains were collected by search teams from the Can Tho Military Command and the Political Department of Military Region 9 from various locations in the Phong Dien district.

Among the 38 sets of remains, one has been identified as Nguyễn Thị Út, a female guerrilla fighter from Tân Hòa commune who died in 1969. Officials, including Nguyễn Văn Khởi, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho People's Committee and head of the city's Steering Committee 515, expressed a poignant concern for the 37 sets of remains whose identities remain unknown.

Can Tho authorities pledged to continue their efforts to locate, identify, and properly inter all fallen soldiers. They committed to meticulously caring for the existing graves and to further investigate temporary burial sites from the war era. The city also plans to conduct DNA testing to identify more soldiers, ensuring their sacrifices are honored and their families potentially notified.
