Can Tho Power Company records 148 thefts of electrical materials and equipment

The city of Can Tho is grappling with a surge in electrical equipment theft, with the Can Tho Power Company (PC Can Tho) recording 148 incidents since the start of 2026. These thefts have resulted in estimated damages exceeding 1.5 billion VND (approximately $60,000 USD).

Thieves are primarily targeting valuable materials such as insulated copper cables, grounding wires, neutral wires, and underground cables. The company stated that these actions not only cause significant financial losses but also pose risks of fire and explosion. Furthermore, the disruptions interrupt electricity supply, impacting businesses, production facilities, and the daily lives of residents.

In a recent incident on July 28, police apprehended a suspect attempting to steal cables from a substation in Ninh Kieu district. Authorities recovered several meters of copper cable. While one suspect escaped, investigations are ongoing to apprehend the second individual involved.

PC Can Tho is collaborating with the Can Tho City Police to prevent and address these thefts. The power company plans to increase its use of digital technology and surveillance systems to protect its infrastructure. The company is also appealing to the public for assistance, asking residents to report suspicious activities to help ensure the safe and stable operation of the electricity grid.
