Canada expects no quick resolution to trade dispute with US

Canada is bracing for a protracted trade dispute with the United States, with officials indicating no swift end to the conflict is expected. The ongoing tensions have led to significant escalations, including the U.S. imposing substantial tariffs on Canadian goods.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew revealed discussions with the Prime Minister emphasized the need to prepare for a trade situation lasting longer than two years. This strategic outlook aims to ensure economic programs provide a bridge through potential future administrations. The current U.S. administration's trade policies have created uncertainty, prompting Canada to plan for sustained engagement.

Last week, trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed, intensifying the dispute. The U.S. subsequently imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian products. In response, Canada announced similar retaliatory tariffs and confirmed a multi-billion dollar support package for Canadian industries impacted by the U.S. measures.

Kinew previously stated that Canada must be prepared to deal with the current U.S. administration for another two years, expressing hope for a return to "common sense" in American policy afterward. He also suggested that Americans themselves will eventually recognize the cost of the current presidency. This stance highlights Canada's determination to navigate the challenging trade environment while advocating for its economic interests.
