Canada fields strong squad for World Cup knockout opener

Canada is set to field its strongest eleven in the opening match of the World Cup's round of 16 against South Africa in Los Angeles. Coach Jesse Marsch is building his team's strategy around the midfield solidity of captain Stephen Eustáquio and the attacking prowess of Jonathan David.

Star player Alphonso Davies will not start but will be on the bench as he continues his recovery. The Canadian lineup features Maxime Crépeau in goal, with a 4-4-2 formation including Alistair Johnston, Eustáquio, David, Liam Millar, Tani Oluwaseyi, Derek Cornelius, Moïse Bombito, Tajon Buchanan, Richie Laryea, and Nathan Saliba.

South Africa is also deploying its best players, opting for a 4-2-3-1 system.
