Canada imposes up to 50% tariffs on US imports in trade dispute

Canada has escalated a trade dispute with the United States by implementing retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on a range of American imports. The new measures, set to take effect on September 8, target goods valued at $27.6 billion.

Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the tariffs, stating, "We did not choose this conflict, but when our economic interdependence is used as a weapon instead of a basis for a mutually beneficial partnership, we must push back." The government specified that the highest 50 percent tariffs would apply to key industries including steel, aluminum, furniture, and apparel. Other goods, such as cheese, household appliances, and certain seafood, will face 25 percent tariffs, while electronics and tools will be subject to 15 percent tariffs.

This action follows U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, made after trade talks between the two neighboring countries failed. The Canadian government views these tariffs as a necessary response to protect its economic interests and to counter the U.S. administration's trade policies.
