Capital Light Rail Inaugurates Full Route, Draws 50,000 Passengers on Opening Day

The Capital Light Rail celebrated its full route inauguration on Saturday, attracting around 50,000 passengers for a free ride. The event marked a significant milestone, connecting Ishøj to Lundtofte with the addition of 17 new stations to the existing 12, which opened in autumn 2025.

Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt, director of the Capital Light Rail, expressed her delight at the public's reception. "It has been a great experience to see so many people embrace the new connection and celebrate that the light rail is now running all the way from Ishøj to Lundtofte," she stated in a press release.

To commemorate the occasion, all rides were free. The light rail utilizes sensors above doors, specifically stereocameras, to automatically count passengers boarding and alighting. Beyond the complimentary travel, the opening day featured a variety of activities and entertainment. A "folk festival" was held at City Hall in Gladsaxe, with performances by artists like Sanne Salomonsen and Tessa.

The light rail currently operates every five to eight minutes during daytime weekdays and Saturdays, and every ten minutes on evenings and Sundays. Following an initial three-to-six-month settling-in period, the service aims to run every five minutes during weekday daytime hours. Projections indicate the light rail is expected to transport approximately 14 million passengers annually by 2030.
