Caracas Morgues Overwhelmed by Earthquake Victims; Families Scramble for Information

The morgues in Caracas are struggling to cope with the influx of bodies following a devastating series of earthquakes that hit Venezuela's coast, plunging the nation into an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Search and rescue teams are working tirelessly, but the scale of the disaster is overwhelming.

Victims are being transported to overwhelmed facilities via unconventional means, including motorcycles, car trunks, and the beds of pickup trucks. This grim reality underscores the desperate efforts of families trying to identify their missing loved ones amidst the chaos. At the Bello Monte morgue, one of the busiest in the capital, volunteers and psychology students are providing emotional support to those awaiting news.

The successive earthquakes, which struck on Wednesday, have caused the collapse of hundreds of buildings, killing at least 1,430 people. Tens of thousands remain unaccounted for. Marjorie Cedeño, who lost both parents and her brother in the collapse of their apartment building, has only been able to identify her brother's body so far. Her parents remain trapped under the rubble.

Frustration is mounting among the population, with many accusing authorities of a slow response during the critical initial hours after the disaster. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced that 33 people were rescued on Saturday, including an 11-year-old boy. However, reports indicate that much of the aid and support reaching devastated neighborhoods is coming from citizens, not the government, highlighting a significant gap in the official response.
