Carragher Slams Liverpool's Midfield: 'Could Be Worst Transfer Window Ever'

Liverpool's midfield came under sharp criticism from club legend Jamie Carragher following their 2-2 draw against Newcastle in the Premier League opener. Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, expressed strong doubts about the effectiveness of the current midfield configuration under new manager Andoni Iraola.

I don't think that midfield can work with those players there. For me, it doesn't work. And it's not just about personnel, it's about the structure the manager is asking for.

Carragher specifically targeted the midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Florian Wirtz, deeming it fundamentally unworkable. He argued that the players' natural inclination to push forward simultaneously leaves significant gaps in the team's structure, which opponents like Newcastle can exploit. "I don't think I've ever seen a more offensive team, or players who think so offensively in the Premier League," Carragher stated, highlighting the extreme attacking nature of the setup.

The pundit also raised questions about Florian Wirtz's role within the team. Despite Wirtz's respectable performance last season, Carragher suggested that with Szoboszlai often playing as an attacking midfielder (a 'number 10'), there isn't a natural place for Wirtz in the current system. This tactical conundrum is compounded by Liverpool's significant investment in the transfer market.
