Carrick says Manchester United’s draw with Everton “feels like a defeat”

Manchester United let victory slip away at Everton after Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a spectacular equalizer in the 96th minute. The 2-2 draw came after United had taken the lead twice, including through substitute Benjamin Sesko in the 88th minute.

The late goal denied Michael Carrick’s side what appeared to be its second win of the season. Carrick said the team’s work throughout the match should have produced three points. “We’re very disappointed,” he said, describing the result as an unpleasant reward for reaching winning positions twice near the end.

Carrick acknowledged that one point still added to United’s total, but said the circumstances made the result feel worse. “It feels like a defeat,” he said. “We’ve got a point, we can’t ignore that, but it feels like we should have got more.”

United are 11th after three matches, with one victory, one draw and one defeat. Carrick rejected the suggestion that the team had made a poor start, saying United had nearly taken all three points and that the season was still in its early stages.

He said the team needed to manage crucial moments better when leading. Marcus Rashford offered one of the brighter aspects of the performance, attacking from the left and troubling Everton’s defense before leaving with a second-half problem. Carrick said Rashford had looked sharp and continued to make progress since returning to action.
