Cavani departs Boca Juniors without titles amid injury struggles

Edinson Cavani's tenure at Boca Juniors has come to an abrupt end, with the Uruguayan striker agreeing to terminate his contract prematurely. The move follows a period marked by persistent injuries and a decline in performance, starkly contrasting the high expectations that accompanied his arrival.

Cavani joined Boca Juniors in August 2023, heralded by club president Juan Román Riquelme as "the best foreign signing in the history of Argentine football." The striker arrived with the ambition of scoring goals and winning titles. However, his time at the club was significantly hampered by lumbar problems that caused him unbearable pain, often relegating him to the stands at La Bombonera.

His last appearance for Boca was on February 20th of this year, in a goalless draw against Racing. The match concluded with Cavani being subjected to loud whistles from the crowd, reflecting growing fan frustration. This public discontent, coupled with his struggles with injuries, missed opportunities, and the team's overall lack of success, painted a grim picture of his spell at the club.

With the arrival of new coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena for the second half of the year, it became clear Cavani would not be part of the plans for upcoming competitions. Following discussions with the board led by Riquelme, an agreement was reached to end his contract, which was originally set to expire on December 31st. Cavani, now 39, leaves Boca after 81 matches, 28 goals, and notably, without securing any titles, turning his initial dream of retiring at the club into a disappointing reality.
