Centenarian Calligrapher Yang Yungui Dies at 103; County Government Issues Posthumous Commendation

Hsinchu County has lost a local treasure with the passing of Yang Yungui, a centenarian and renowned calligrapher, at the age of 103. The county government, recognizing his lifelong dedication to the art of calligraphy, the preservation of cultural history, and his service to the community, posthumously awarded him a commendation.

Born in 1924 in Emei Township, Yang was celebrated for his profound understanding of Chinese characters, particularly in regular and running script. His deep cultural roots and knowledge of local traditions earned him the title of a "textbook" on Hsinchu County's cultural heritage. His artistic legacy is visible on the pillars of prominent local temples like Longsheng Palace and Dangui Palace, where his inscriptions add a rich artistic flair.

To honor his contributions to calligraphy, cultural heritage, and local public affairs throughout his life, the Hsinchu County Government today presented a posthumous commendation, accepted by his eldest son Yang Yue-xun, to recognize this local cultural and historical treasure.

Beyond his calligraphy, Yang was a man of many talents. He was skilled in traditional Chinese music, playing the erhu and singing traditional melodies. His expertise extended to painting and chess, showcasing a well-rounded artistic and intellectual life. He possessed a systematic understanding of local customs, historical anecdotes, and cultural evolution, leading to his appointment as a Hsinchu County government advisor. His extensive experience and knowledge were instrumental in assisting local authorities in preserving cultural memory, solidifying his reputation as an expert consultant on local history and culture.

During a memorial service, Deputy Magistrate Hsu Yuan-tung presented the commendation on behalf of the county government. The citation praised Yang Yungui for embodying the ideals of "establishing virtue, establishing words, and establishing art" throughout his life, setting a high standard for the calligraphy community and society at large.
