Cepeda Says Colombia Faces 'Severe Spiritual Crisis' Amid Inequality and Violence

Iván Cepeda, a leftist presidential candidate, declared that Colombia is experiencing a "severe spiritual crisis" driven by decades of violence, inequality, and moral decline. Speaking to religious leaders in Barranquilla, he urged the nation to pursue an "ethical revolution" to foster a society grounded in human dignity, solidarity, and respect for nature.

Cepeda argued that Colombian society must reclaim essential values to counteract individualism, consumerism, and indifference towards the suffering of others. He noted that a significant majority of Colombians identify as Catholic, with a substantial minority adhering to other Christian denominations. "When a community focuses on having rather than being, its moral downfall begins," he stated, emphasizing the vital role of religious spirituality in an "ethical revolution of consciousness."

The candidate also acknowledged the contributions of religious communities in supporting victims of the armed conflict, protecting persecuted individuals, and promoting reconciliation across the country. He specifically refuted campaign messages, including AI-manipulated videos, that falsely portray him as an adversary of churches. Cepeda categorically denied these accusations, pledging to uphold religious freedom if elected president and assuring that his government would never seek to close churches or persecute any religious group.

These remarks come just days before the presidential runoff election, where the support of religious voters is a key battleground. Cepeda's opponent, far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, has also invoked morality and spiritual warfare in his campaign, framing the election as a fight for the nation's soul.
