Ceuta migrant crisis continues, sparking border controls in Europe

The situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta remains dire, escalating on Sunday evening as migrants transferred from an initial reception center to the beach resisted deportation to Morocco. Numerous men reportedly marched through the city chanting "Allahu Akbar." The Spanish opposition, particularly VOX, accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of sharing responsibility with Morocco for what they termed an "invasion."

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party (PP), also present in Ceuta, stated that the "normality" described by the government does not exist on the streets. He emphasized the need for continued efforts toward "humanity, coexistence, and security" to end the crisis and prevent its recurrence. Feijóo asserted that Spain's territorial integrity is non-negotiable and that the country would not accept being disrespected or humiliated.

In response to the crisis, Italy temporarily reintroduced border controls for arrivals from Spain. The situation had already caused diplomatic friction, leading to the summoning of the Italian ambassador to Madrid. France also implemented checks along its borders with Italy and Spain. The European Commission and several EU member states have deemed the situation in Ceuta unacceptable.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Ceuta on Friday, speaking of a violation of Spain's territorial integrity and promising measures, including the construction of a technical barrier. However, opposition figures argue that thousands of migrants remain in Ceuta, causing fear among residents who are unable to leave their homes.
