Chad joins list of countries leaving International Criminal Court

Chad has announced its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), becoming the latest African nation to distance itself from the tribunal. This move follows similar declarations this month by Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The ICC, based in The Hague, prosecutes individuals for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Chadian authorities stated that the decision stemmed from an internal review of the court's operations. They accuse the ICC of disproportionately focusing on African nations, noting that nine out of the 13 investigations initiated since the court's inception have targeted African countries, with only four involving other regions. A statement on the Chadian foreign minister's Facebook page last week suggested that the United States had pressured Niger to reconsider its ICC membership. Earlier this week, Chad's Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul discussed Chad's ICC membership with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia, who reportedly urged Fadoul to reconsider.

Human rights organizations have recently urged the ICC to investigate Chad's alleged involvement in the conflict in Sudan, as Chad has been accused of supporting the RSF rebel group. French lawyer Vincent Brengarth, representing NGOs alleging war crimes in Sudan, commented that Chad's withdrawal undermines the likelihood of those responsible being brought to justice. The ICC's executive management has expressed concern over the trend of member states withdrawing, stating it erodes international justice.
