Chamber proposes structural reform to medical licensing system

Chile's Chamber of Deputies has approved a significant structural reform of the medical licensing system following an extensive investigation into its misuse within the public sector. The final report, adopted by a majority of 106 votes with three abstentions, stems from a special parliamentary committee tasked with examining the proper granting and use of medical leaves.

The inquiry was initiated in response to allegations of improper use of medical leave by state employees, who were reportedly traveling abroad while on sick leave. These practices were initially exposed in reports by the General Comptroller's Office of the Republic. A particularly concerning finding of the investigation was that various state departments were already aware of these practices before the comptroller's office issued its official findings.

The investigation concluded that the issue of medical leave misuse is not an isolated or temporary problem but represents a "widespread institutional weakness" that significantly compromises public resources. The approved reform aims to address these systemic failures and prevent future abuses, ensuring that medical leave is used appropriately and does not drain public funds through fraudulent claims.
