Chamwino constituency declared vacant in Tanzania

The Chamwino constituency in Tanzania's Dodoma region is now officially vacant, creating a vacancy in Parliament. The seat became available after Deogratius Ndejembi, the area's Member of Parliament, was nominated for the position of Vice President by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

The NEC convened on August 26, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, under the chairmanship of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The committee unanimously endorsed Ndejembi for the Vice President role. Ndejembi, who previously served as the Minister for Energy, is stepping into the position vacated by Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, who resigned on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with his resignation being accepted by President Samia.

According to Article 71(1)(e) of the Tanzanian Constitution, a Member of Parliament ceases to hold their seat if they are elected or appointed as Vice President. Consequently, the next step involves the Speaker of Parliament, Mussa Zungu, officially informing the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) about the vacancy in the Chamwino constituency.

Following the Speaker's notification, the INEC will announce the vacancy and commence the process for a by-election in the Chamwino constituency. Ndejembi had represented this constituency since 2020.
