Chaos in Italian Senate over lawmaker's chat logs

The Italian Senate descended into tumult, marked by shouts and physical altercations, after the government's right-wing majority voted against providing prosecutors with chat conversations. The request concerned messages between a close collaborator of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and an entrepreneur convicted of mafia-related offenses. The lawmaker in question is Andrea Delmastro, a member of Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia party and a former undersecretary of justice.

The parliamentary commission responsible for authorizing criminal proceedings against legislators had previously rejected the Rome Prosecutor's Office's bid to access the chats. Prosecutors sought these conversations as part of their investigation into Mauro Caroccia, an entrepreneur with whom Delmastro co-owned a restaurant and whose daughter is married to the lawmaker. Delmastro was compelled to resign from his justice undersecretary role in March due to the scandal.

The majority's refusal to grant judicial authorities access to the communications between Delmastro and Caroccia ignited intense tension during the Senate session. Opposition senators from the Five Star Movement (M5S) vociferously condemned the decision, calling it "shameful," particularly on a day commemorating Judge Paolo Borsellino, who was assassinated by the Sicilian mafia 34 years prior. M5S senators staged a protest, occupying seats reserved for government members and displaying signs demanding the release of the chats.

Giuseppe Conte, the leader of M5S, questioned the government's motives, asking what they feared and what they had to hide. He accused them of potentially obstructing investigations involving a mafia clan. Similar criticisms came from other opposition parties, including the Democratic Party, whose representative described the government's action as a "deliberate interference to harm prosecutors."
