Maduro Returns to New York Court for Third Hearing in Drug Trafficking Case

Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro is set to appear in a New York federal court on Wednesday for a new hearing in the criminal case against him. Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, 69, face charges including conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism and drug importation.

The couple has been detained in a Brooklyn federal prison since their capture in Caracas on January 3 by U.S. forces. Outside the courthouse, a small group of demonstrators gathered, with some calling for Maduro's release and others supporting his apprehension. Police maintained a heavy presence to prevent clashes between the two factions.

Prior to the hearing, prosecutors and the defense jointly submitted a document to Judge Alvin Hellerstein proposing two rounds of pre-trial motions and suggesting a trial commencement in June 2027. The defense intends to file initial motions, including one asserting Maduro's immunity, before evidence disclosure is complete. Prosecutors aim to complete the disclosure of unclassified evidence by September 22 and classified evidence by November 15, though they cautioned that this timeline could be subject to change.

Maduro faces charges related to narcoterrorism and cocaine importation, while Flores is accused of drug importation and weapons possession offenses. Both pleaded not guilty during their first court appearance on January 5. Maduro appeared in handcuffs and wearing a federal inmate uniform, assisted by a Spanish interpreter.
